Abure's Labour Party ratifies 2024 congresses, fills vacancies

The Labour Party’s National Executive Council, chaired by Julius Abure, has reaffirmed the national officers elected at the party’s 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State. The decision was taken at a meeting held on Friday at the party’s national secretariat in Utako, Abuja. Attendees included members of the National Working Committee, state chairmen and secretaries, stakeholders, and officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

During the session, the council reviewed the controversies surrounding the 2024 convention and the ongoing litigations. A joint statement signed by Abure and the factional National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, confirmed that the reaffirmed officers comprise the national treasurer, publicity secretary, legal adviser, financial secretary, organising secretary, women leader, and youth leader. The council also empowered the national chairman and national secretary to convene a special convention when necessary.

In addition, the council ratified plans to conduct ward, local‑government, and state congresses across the federation. These congresses are intended to reorganise the party’s grassroots structures and build a stronger foundation for upcoming elections.

The Labour Party’s 2024 national convention had been marred by controversy, prompting the National Executive Council to review the situation and take a decisive stance. By reaffirming the elected national officers and incorporating INEC’s input, the party aims to ensure its activities align with electoral regulations, strengthen internal structures, and prepare for future electoral challenges. With the officers confirmed and congresses scheduled, the Labour Party is moving forward with its internal reorganisation, seeking greater unity and stability ahead of forthcoming elections.
