Comedian Sabinus reveals dad initially rejected career choice

Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, known professionally as Sabinus, has spoken about the initial disapproval he faced from his father regarding his career choice. In an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus revealed that his father had initially wanted him to pursue a career in law, but he eventually settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt after failing to secure admission into a law program.

It was during his time at the university that Sabinus discovered his talent for comedy and began creating skits. However, his father was not aware of his comedic pursuits until after he had graduated. When his father found out, he was furious, describing comedy as a “stupid business” and expressing regret over funding his education.

Sabinus recounted the experience, stating that his father had been disappointed in his decision to pursue comedy, given his initial aspirations for him to become a lawyer. The comedian’s sisters had confirmed his involvement in comedy to their father, who was further displeased upon seeing Sabinus featured on comedy show posters.

However, Sabinus’s father eventually gave his blessing after seeing the financial rewards of his son’s comedy career. The comedian began gifting his father money from his earnings, which helped to change his perspective on the matter.

Sabinus’s story highlights the challenges that many young people face in pursuing careers in the entertainment industry, particularly when their choices are not aligned with their parents’ expectations. Despite the initial disapproval, Sabinus has gone on to build a successful career in comedy, demonstrating the importance of perseverance and passion in overcoming obstacles.

The Nigerian comedy scene has experienced significant growth in recent years, with many young comedians gaining popularity and recognition. Sabinus’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring comedians and a reminder that success can be achieved with dedication and hard work, even in the face of adversity.
