Labour Party Crisis: Obi Still a Member

Obi Remains a Labour Party Member, Says Datti Baba-Ahmed

The Labour Party has dispelled rumors that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has left the party. Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former vice-presidential candidate, made this clarification after the party’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, which was attended by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission. According to Baba-Ahmed, Obi remains a member of the Labour Party, and his absence from the meeting did not indicate a departure from the party.

The Labour Party has been working to resolve its internal conflicts, and the NEC meeting marked a significant step towards reconciliation. The party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, chaired the meeting, which aimed to address the leadership tussle that emerged after the 2024 national convention in Nnewi. The convention had split the party into rival camps, with top figures such as Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti backing different factions.

Baba-Ahmed emphasized that the party has emerged stronger from its internal troubles and is now focused on moving forward. He highlighted the presence of INEC officials at the meeting as a major boost, validating the party’s efforts to adhere to the law and ensuring its legitimacy. The Labour Party is committed to reconciliation and is open to welcoming new and existing members, according to Baba-Ahmed.

The party’s commitment to workers’ welfare remains a top priority, with a focus on ensuring decent and realistic living wages for all workers. This stance is in line with the party’s founding principles and will continue to play a key role in its agenda until 2027 and beyond.

The Labour Party’s NEC meeting comes at a time when Nigeria is facing rising insecurity, with recent incidents of school abductions and killings of senior army officers. Baba-Ahmed recalled that the party had warned of such outcomes if the country failed to elect the right leadership. He emphasized that the Labour Party remains committed to addressing the nation’s challenges and is poised to make a positive impact in the future. With its internal conflicts being addressed, the party is now focused on the tasks ahead, including promoting workers’ welfare and contributing to the country’s development.
