Adamawa State Government Cracks Down on Environmental Sanitation Defaulters
In a bid to enforce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, officials of the Adamawa State Government disrupted the activities of traders and artisans who failed to comply with the restriction on movement. The exercise, held on the last Saturday of every month, aims to promote a clean environment, with residents expected to clean their surroundings between 7 am and 10 am.
The state’s Monthly Sanitation Committee, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs Syngana Dadah, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Adamawa State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr Umar Ibrahim, embarked on a tour of the state capital, Yola, to ensure compliance. The team visited several communities, including Jambutu, Wauro Jabbe, Bachure, Jimeta By-pass, and Nasarawo, where they encountered numerous defaulters.
To enforce the restriction, the committee seized utensils from roadside food vendors, extinguished cooking fires, and scattered tables displaying goods. The exercise was marred by a noticeable decline in residents’ enthusiasm, with many choosing to operate their businesses despite the restriction. Mrs Dadah expressed concern over the lack of participation, citing the need for increased public education on the importance of the exercise.
Dr Ibrahim suggested that a house-to-house awareness campaign could help promote compliance with the monthly exercise. The agency plans to collaborate with the ministry to intensify efforts to educate the public and encourage a higher level of participation. The government’s efforts to maintain a clean environment are crucial, given the potential health risks associated with poor sanitation.
The monthly environmental sanitation exercise is a vital initiative aimed at promoting a healthy and sustainable environment. The state government’s commitment to enforcing the exercise demonstrates its dedication to the well-being of its residents. As the government continues to work towards increasing public awareness and participation, it is essential for residents to take an active role in maintaining their surroundings and contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment. With continued efforts from both the government and the public, Adamawa State can achieve its goal of a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
