Adamawa sanitation officials clamp down on defaulters amid poor compliance

The Adamawa State Government has intensified its crackdown on environmental sanitation defaulters as part of the monthly clean‑up exercise. Officials disrupted the activities of traders and artisans who ignored the movement restriction that requires residents to clean their surroundings between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the last Saturday of each month. The Monthly Sanitation Committee, chaired by Mrs. Syngana Dadah, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, and Dr. Umar Ibrahim, CEO of the Adamawa State Environmental Protection Agency, toured the state capital, Yola, to ensure compliance.

During the tour, the team visited several communities, including Jambutu, Wauro Jabbe, Bachure, Jimeta By‑pass, and Nasarawo, where they encountered numerous defaulters. To enforce the restriction, the committee seized utensils from roadside food vendors, extinguished cooking fires and removed tables displaying goods. Despite these actions, many residents continued to operate their businesses, leading to a noticeable decline in enthusiasm for the exercise.

Mrs. Dadah expressed concern over the low participation rate and emphasized the need for greater public education on the importance of the sanitation drive. Dr. Ibrahim suggested that a house‑to‑house awareness campaign could improve compliance. The agency plans to collaborate with the ministry to intensify efforts to educate the public and encourage higher participation.

Maintaining a clean environment is crucial given the health risks associated with poor sanitation. The monthly environmental sanitation exercise remains a vital initiative for promoting a healthy and sustainable environment. The state government’s commitment to enforcing the exercise demonstrates its dedication to residents’ well‑being. As public awareness and participation increase, residents must take an active role in keeping their surroundings clean, helping Adamawa State achieve its goal of a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
