Nigeria Railway Warns Vandals Amid Electric Rail Upgrade

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has warned individuals against trespassing and vandalism on railway tracks as the country transitions to electric rail lines. Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa emphasized the importance of safety during this period, citing the risks associated with electrified tracks.

In an interview, Opeifa highlighted the benefits of electric rail, including increased safety, speed, and environmental sustainability. However, he cautioned that tampering with the lines poses a significant risk of electrocution, injury, or death. To mitigate these risks, the NRC has enhanced security measures, including surveillance systems, monitoring teams, and public awareness campaigns.

The corporation is investing heavily in security and public awareness to protect both the infrastructure and surrounding communities. Opeifa urged residents living near rail corridors to avoid restricted areas and report suspicious activities, emphasizing that the new system is a national investment that requires protection. He noted that modern rail lines are national assets, and safeguarding them is essential.

The electrification project is part of broader reforms aimed at improving passenger services, expanding freight operations, and increasing private sector participation. The NRC is working to modernize Nigeria’s rail system, and the transition to electric rail lines is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

As the country continues to develop its rail infrastructure, the importance of safety and security cannot be overstated. The NRC’s efforts to educate the public and prevent accidents are crucial to ensuring the success of the electrification project. By protecting the rail infrastructure, Nigeria can reap the benefits of a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation system, ultimately driving economic growth and development.
