Osun 2026: Female Lawmaker Joins Governorship Race

A former Osun State House of Assembly member, Mulikat Abiola, has declared her intention to run for the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in the upcoming election. The APC has scheduled its primary for December 13, with at least seven aspirants having obtained nomination forms so far. Abiola, who served in the assembly from 2018 to 2023, is the only female candidate to have purchased the form.

The APC governorship primary is expected to be highly contested, with notable figures such as former APC National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, and former Deputy Governor, Mr Benedict Alabi, already in the race. Other aspirants include Mr Bola Oyebamiji, the immediate past Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, and Lagos-based engineer, Dideolu Falobi.

Abiola’s decision to join the race is driven by her concern about the underrepresentation of women in politics. She stated that the time has come to raise awareness and push for greater female participation in leadership positions. According to Abiola, her candidacy aims to demonstrate that women can lead and make a positive impact in the state’s governance.

In a statement, Abiola expressed her confidence in winning the party’s primary and the subsequent governorship election, scheduled for August 8, 2026. She emphasized that her focus is on restoring the state’s lost glory and ensuring that women are given their rightful place in the political sphere.

The upcoming election is significant, as it will determine the next governor of Osun State. The APC primary will be a crucial step in the process, as it will decide which candidate will represent the party in the general election. With Abiola’s entry into the race, the contest is expected to be more diverse, and her candidacy may inspire more women to participate in the political process.

As the election approaches, the people of Osun State will be watching closely to see how the candidates perform and which one will ultimately emerge as the winner. The outcome of the primary and the general election will have a significant impact on the state’s future, and citizens will be eager to see which leader will be at the helm.
