PDP Proceeds With Osun Gubernatorial Primary Amid Disputes

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to holding its scheduled primary election for the 2026 gubernatorial election in Osun State. Despite earlier reports of a postponement due to internal disputes within the party’s national leadership, the PDP’s national level has confirmed that the primary will proceed as planned on Tuesday.

The Osun State chapter of the PDP had initially announced a postponement, citing unresolved issues and the suspension of key officers responsible for overseeing the primary. However, in a statement issued by the National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Dakas Shan, the party reminded stakeholders that the primaries will take place as scheduled.

The primary election is set to hold on December 2, 2025, at the Atlantis Multipurpose Hall in Osogbo, Osun State, at 10 am. An electoral committee has been constituted to oversee the conduct of the primaries, and candidates cleared for the election have been advised to behave in accordance with the party’s constitution and the law.

The PDP had earlier completed congresses to elect ad-hoc delegates and national delegates in Osun State on November 24 and 29, 2025, as part of the process leading up to the gubernatorial primaries. The party had also notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its intention to hold the primaries on October 28, 2025.

The decision to proceed with the primary election despite internal disputes underscores the PDP’s commitment to its electoral timetable. As the party moves forward with the selection of its gubernatorial candidate, it is likely that the outcome of the primary will have significant implications for the 2026 election in Osun State. With the electoral committee in place and the stage set for the primaries, the PDP is poised to take a crucial step towards determining its candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election.
