Arsenal legend backs Gyokeres to start ahead of Merino

Merino vs Gyokeres: Seaman advises Arteta on who to play as Arsenal’s number 9

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has suggested that manager Mikel Arteta should consider playing Viktor Gyokeres as the team’s primary striker, ahead of Mikel Merino. This recommendation comes after Arteta opted to start Merino in the number nine position during the Gunners’ recent match against Chelsea.

Seaman’s comments were made ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford, scheduled to take place on Wednesday. When discussing the team’s attacking strategy, Seaman noted that Merino tends to drop back and operate as a false nine, whereas Gyokeres is a more traditional, out-and-out striker.

According to Seaman, Gyokeres’ ability to hold up the ball and bring other players into the game would be a valuable asset to the team. He stated, “When you have got Gyokeres in there, he is an out-and-out striker, he gives you that option of holding the ball up and letting us get out.” Seaman believes that the decision to play Gyokeres or Merino ultimately depends on the style of play Arteta wants to employ.

In recent matches, Arteta has experimented with different formations and player positions, aiming to find the most effective combination. The choice between Gyokeres and Merino will likely be influenced by the team’s overall strategy and the strengths of their opponents. As the Premier League season progresses, Arteta’s decisions on player selection will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike.

The upcoming match against Brentford will provide an opportunity for Arteta to reassess his team’s attacking lineup and potentially make adjustments. With several key players vying for positions, the competition for a starting spot is likely to be intense. As the Gunners seek to improve their performance and climb the league table, the selection of their striker will be a crucial factor in determining their success.
