Cross River Governor Kicks Off Festive Season

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has officially inaugurated the 2025 Christmas celebrations by switching on the festive lights at the Calabar Cenotaph. The event marks the beginning of the festive season and highlights the state’s spirit of unity and continuity in governance.

Addressing residents, artists, and dignitaries, Governor Otu praised the leadership legacies that have shaped the state. He commended former Governor Clement Ebri for his achievements in agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure, referring to him as “the father of modern Cross River.” Otu also acknowledged the contributions of former Governors Donald Duke, Liyel Imoke, and Ben Ayade, recognizing their innovative approaches to governance and development.

Governor Otu expressed his commitment to building on the visions of his predecessors, focusing on human capital development, industrialization, rural transformation, and tourism. He urged citizens to approach the festive season with hope and optimism, stating, “May our faith shine as a beacon of renewal and prosperity.”

Former Governor Clement Ebri expressed gratitude to Otu for sustaining a culture of honor, describing the gesture as uplifting. Donald Duke reflected on the 20-year journey of Carnival Calabar, noting that the festival has remained a unifying symbol for the state’s diverse population. Liyel Imoke commended Otu for his commitment to continuity, stating that it is uncommon for a governor to acknowledge and build on the achievements of their predecessors.

The event brought together former governors and leaders from across the state, demonstrating a spirit of unity and cooperation. Former Governor Ben Ayade applauded Otu for bringing together leaders from different political backgrounds, stating that the gesture shows wisdom and a commitment to unity.
