Apple AI Chief Retires As iPhone Maker Plays Catch-Up • Channels Television

Apple’s artificial‑intelligence team is undergoing a major transition. Current head John Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018, will retire early next year and will serve as an advisor during his remaining time with the company. The firm announced that Amar Subramanya, a veteran engineer from Google and Microsoft, will assume leadership of Apple’s AI efforts.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, thanked Giannandrea for his contributions and welcomed Subramanya, emphasizing that his experience integrating AI into features and products is crucial for Apple’s ongoing innovation. Subramanya brings 16 years at Google, where he led the engineering team for the Gemini digital assistant, and a stint as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. His expertise is expected to drive Apple’s AI initiatives, including the development of foundation models and machine‑learning capabilities.

The leadership change comes amid a fierce industry race to dominate artificial intelligence, with rivals such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI continuously releasing advanced models and features. Apple, which postponed the launch of an enhanced Siri digital assistant earlier this year, now promises to release a more personalized Siri next year. Cook has stressed that AI is “central to our strategy,” and senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi will oversee Subramanya’s work.

Apple’s push to embed AI across its products and services is supported by its custom chips and ongoing research and development. As the tech giant navigates the rapidly evolving AI landscape, Subramanya’s appointment is seen as a significant step toward strengthening Apple’s AI capabilities and remaining competitive in the market. With his expertise and Apple’s commitment to innovation, the company is poised to make substantial strides in artificial intelligence.
