PDP: Damagum officially hands over to Turaki-led NWC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has undergone a significant leadership change. Former acting National Chairman Umar Damagum handed over authority to the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) led by Tanimu Turaki. The transition took place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, marking the end of Damagum’s tenure, which expired on 8 December 2025.

The leadership shift follows a period of internal conflict, with a faction headed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike contesting the party’s leadership. Despite these challenges, Damagum expressed optimism about the PDP’s future, stating that the new NWC has a mandate to reunify the party. He emphasized the PDP’s resilience, noting that, despite obstacles, it remains a dominant force in Nigerian politics because of its commitment to justice and the support of its members. The outgoing chairman also warned that those responsible for the party’s crisis would ultimately face consequences for their actions.

Turaki, the new NWC chairman, praised the outgoing leadership for its efforts and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the PDP. The transition marks a new chapter as the party seeks to regain stability and cohesion. Observers are closely watching the PDP’s internal dynamics, recognizing that its ability to navigate current challenges will be crucial for its future prospects.

As the new NWC assumes responsibility, it must address the underlying issues that led to the leadership crisis and work toward rebuilding the party’s strength. The handover ceremony represents a significant step toward resolving internal conflicts, and the new leadership will be expected to hit the ground running. With the 2025 deadline now passed, the PDP must focus on repositioning itself for upcoming elections and reclaiming its status as a dominant force in Nigerian politics.
