President Bola Tinubu launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem appeal fund on Tuesday, announcing donations that totalled N320 million. He led the contributions with a personal donation of N200 million, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to honoring fallen heroes and supporting serving troops. The ceremony, held at the State House in Abuja, also saw Senate President Godswill Akpabio donate N100 million and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike pledge N20 million.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on 15 January, is a solemn occasion to honour those who have paid the ultimate price for national unity and peace. In his remarks, President Tinubu paid tribute to the troops currently confronting terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other security threats, describing their dedication as a source of national pride. He highlighted that improved collaboration among security agencies has yielded significant gains, including the surrender of insurgents, the neutralisation of terrorist leaders and the rescue of captives.

The president disclosed that the Ministry of Defence is developing a programme to deploy retired military personnel to reclaim ungoverned spaces nationwide. He also announced a new “Thank a Soldier” digital platform, accessible via QR code, which will enable Nigerians to send messages of appreciation to the troops. Tinubu urged citizens to wear the 2026 emblem with pride, symbolising sacrifice and national gratitude, and to reject divisive rhetoric while safeguarding the nation’s diversity.

As Commander‑in‑Chief, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to equipping and motivating the military, stating that security remains a central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda. The event marked the start of nationwide fundraising and awareness activities ahead of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day on 15 January 2026.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials, including Vice‑President Kashim Shettima and the service chiefs. Mrs. Grace Henry, Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, presented decorations to dignitaries and appealed for continued support for the armed forces. The donations and the launch of the emblem appeal fund demonstrate the government’s dedication to supporting the military and honouring the sacrifices of fallen heroes. As the nation prepares to commemorate the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, citizens are encouraged to show their appreciation for the troops and their families.
