Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Moeen Ali has criticized Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s comments on the team’s rebuilding phase. This comes after India’s 0-2 home Test series defeat to South Africa, their second consecutive embarrassing whitewash under Gambhir’s coaching tenure.
Gambhir had defended the poor results, stating that the team was undergoing a rebuilding phase with a slew of younger players. However, Ali disagreed with this assessment, saying that the team’s expectations and performance are not aligned with a rebuilding phase. He noted that India expects to win at home and that the current team has top players who are capable of delivering results.
Ali also emphasized the significance of Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement from red-ball cricket, believing that he is a massive miss for the team, particularly in home Tests. Ashwin had an impressive record in home Tests, with 383 wickets at an average of 21.57, including 29 five-wicket hauls. He also contributed significantly with the bat, scoring almost 2,000 Test runs with four centuries at home.
Under Gambhir’s coaching, India has a sub-par Test record, with three series defeats in six affairs and only seven wins in 19 outings. The team’s performance has raised questions about their ability to compete at the highest level, particularly in home Tests. With Gambhir’s coaching tenure being marked by significant changes, including the retirement of veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ashwin, the team’s future prospects remain uncertain.
The recent series defeat to South Africa has highlighted the challenges that India faces in the Test format. As the team looks to regroup and rebuild, they will need to address the gaps in their lineup and find ways to compete with top teams like South Africa and New Zealand. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining the team’s direction and prospects under Gambhir’s coaching.
