Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has presented a 1.7 trillion‑naira budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year, a 63 % increase over the previous year’s 1.054 trillion‑naira budget. Branded the “Budget of Sustainable Legacy,” the plan allocates 624.76 billion naira for recurrent expenditure and 1.044 trillion naira for capital expenditure. Its main components include personnel costs, consolidated revenue charges, public debt charges, overhead costs and capital outlays.
The governor explained that the budget will be financed through a mix of internally generated revenue, statutory allocations from the federal government and capital receipts. Ogun State expects to generate 509.88 billion naira internally, with 250 billion coming from the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service and 259.80 billion from ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
Sectoral allocations are detailed in the proposal: education is slated to receive 275.40 billion naira, health 210.59 billion naira, and infrastructure the largest share at 526.15 billion naira. Additional funds are earmarked for social protection, recreation, culture and religion, general public service and personnel service.
Governor Abiodun emphasized that the 2026 budget will focus on completing key projects under the ISEYA development pillars, prioritising initiatives with strong revenue‑generating potential, employment creation and alignment with national development plans. He noted that the 2025 budget had achieved 60 % of its pro‑rata expenditure target and 53 % of its pro‑rata revenue performance as of 30 September 2025.
Describing the new budget as significant, the governor highlighted improved economic performance and growth across key sectors. Ogun’s economy is estimated to have a gross domestic product of 17 trillion naira, with internally generated revenue rising sharply from 52 billion naira in 2020 to nearly 192 billion naira in 2024. The proposal aims to stimulate inclusive growth, reduce inequality and enhance the overall quality of life in the state.
With its focus on key projects and sectors, the 2026 budget is expected to drive economic growth and development in Ogun State. The governor’s presentation marks a pivotal step toward achieving the state’s development goals and improving the lives of its citizens.
