APC Impeaches Cross River Chairman Over Misconduct

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has taken a significant step by impeaching its chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba, over allegations of financial misconduct and administrative high-handedness. The decision was made by the State Working Committee (SWC) at the party’s secretariat in Calabar on Thursday.

Eba, who has been chairman since October 2021, was accused of embezzlement, misappropriation of party funds, and failure to pay stipends to party officials, among other allegations. The SWC, comprising chapter chairmen and stakeholders, stated that Eba’s conduct had hindered party operations and strained relationships across the state.

The impeachment motion was moved by the State Welfare Secretary, Okara Ekawu, and seconded by the State Treasurer, Dr. Matthew Egom. The committee claimed to have thoroughly investigated the allegations before reaching a unanimous decision. Eba has been directed to hand over all party property and documents to the acting chairman, pending further directives from the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The Forum of APC Chapter Chairmen had earlier called for Eba’s removal, citing his failure to pay stipends for over three months and the worsening welfare of ward and chapter officials. The non-payment of stipends was described as unprecedented by Forum Chairman Kelvin Nyong, who also accused Eba of creating divisions within the party.

The leadership change is seen as necessary for stability and effective administration, with party leaders reaffirming their loyalty to Governor Bassey Otu. Eba had faced similar opposition in the past, with party stalwarts calling for his removal over related allegations. The controversy surrounding his leadership was further fueled by his decision to organize a grand airport reception for former governor Ben Ayade, which was perceived as a slight to the current leadership.

The impeachment of Eba marks a significant development in the APC’s efforts to address internal conflicts and ensure effective governance in Cross River State. As the party moves forward, it is likely to focus on rebuilding and strengthening its structures, with a view to improving its performance in future elections. The National Executive Committee (NEC) is expected to provide further guidance on the matter, which may have implications for the party’s national leadership and its overall strategy.
