‘I feel perfectly safe here' - Boris Johnson rejects negative security reports on Nigeria

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he felt secure during his visit to Nigeria, despite having read negative reports about the country’s safety before traveling. Speaking at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 in Owerri, he acknowledged the warnings, stating, “When I decided to come to Owerri, I read some things, and there were people saying, ‘There may be some security problems in Nigeria.’ And I said, ‘Well, I am going to go anyway.’” He then asked the audience whether they felt safe at the conference and answered, “Yes, we all feel safe. And I feel perfectly safe. Thank you, Governor, for what you are doing.”

Johnson praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for his efforts to provide 24‑hour electricity to the people of Imo State, describing reliable power as a key component of the state’s economic transformation. He emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence, calling it “the future” and highlighting its potential to drive economic growth and development in the region.

The Imo State Economic Summit 2025 aims to promote economic development and attract investment. Governor Uzodimma’s administration has been working to improve infrastructure, including reliable electricity, to make the state more appealing to businesses and investors. Johnson’s visit and endorsement are expected to boost confidence in the region’s economic potential.

The role of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important for Africa’s economic growth. As the continent continues to develop its infrastructure and economies, AI is expected to enable governments and businesses to leverage technology to achieve their goals. Johnson’s comments underscore the potential of AI to support economic transformation in Nigeria and beyond.
