The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has impeached its chairman, Alphonsus Eba, prompting a response from the ousted leader. The impeachment was carried out on Thursday by 30 of the 32 members of the State Executive Committee (SEC), who cited allegations of fund misappropriation, high‑handedness, and failure to pay stipends to party officials. Prior to the vote, chapter chairmen, secretaries and vice‑chairmen had passed a motion of no confidence against Eba, who is also known as the “Political Evangelist.”
Following the impeachment, the state working committee— which controls the state party secretariat—appointed Ntufam Ekum Ojogu as acting chairman. Ojogu pledged to work with stakeholders to strengthen grassroots structures and deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Cross River State. He praised party leaders for their commitment to due process and party stability, noting that the removal of Eba was intended to restore order and accountability.
Eba dismissed the impeachment as “a joke taken too far,” calling the action illegal and asserting that God will speak on his behalf in due time. The state working committee, however, maintained that the impeachment is “done and dusted” and has begun stabilising the party under the new leadership.
The development is significant for the APC in Cross River State as it prepares for upcoming elections. The removal of Eba and the appointment of Ojogu are expected to affect the party’s structure and operations in the state. As the situation unfolds, observers will watch how the party navigates this transition and moves forward under its new leadership.
