Olukayode Afeni assumes office as new Ogun 1 Area Controller of Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service has announced the appointment of Olukayode Oladapo Afeni as the new Customs Area Controller of Ogun 1 Area Command, Idiroko. Afeni, who previously served as the Deputy Comptroller of Customs, took over from Comptroller Godwin Otunla on Thursday. The command’s public relations officer, Chado Zakari, released a statement noting that Afeni expressed gratitude to the Comptroller General of Customs for the confidence placed in him and pledged to build on his predecessor’s achievements in trade facilitation, revenue collection, and anti‑smuggling activities.

During the formal handover ceremony, Afeni emphasized the importance of inter‑agency collaboration and the need to minimize smuggling. He also highlighted personnel welfare and professional development as key priorities under his leadership. Acknowledging the command’s unique operational environment—characterized by vast borders—Afeni recognized its strategic importance to the national economy and border security. He assured stakeholders that he would consolidate the gains made by his predecessor and pursue continuous improvement in efficiency, enforcement, and community relations.

Afeni holds a Bachelor of Technology in Industrial Design and a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and Strategic Studies. He has completed various professional development courses, including conflict management, strategic leadership, and border patrol operations. Outgoing Controller Godwin Otunla described his tenure as “challenging yet fulfilling,” citing significant milestones in reducing smuggling, enhancing trade facilitation, and improving personnel welfare. He expressed confidence that Afeni would build on these achievements and lead the command to greater heights.

The leadership change is expected to positively impact the command’s operations, with Afeni’s experience and expertise set to enhance the service’s efforts in trade facilitation, revenue collection, and border security. As he settles into his role, Afeni will be tasked with addressing the complex challenges facing the command and building on the progress made by his predecessor.
