Engineering sector gets digital boost with project registration portal

The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has launched a digital registration portal for all engineering projects, aiming to enhance professionalism in the sector. According to EBK Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Margaret Ogai, the portal requires engineers to register their projects and obtain a unique number before submitting their drawings to county authorities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that all projects across the country are properly designed and supervised.

The EBK has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) to facilitate information exchange and verify compliance with set standards. Eng. Ogai emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “We have a collaboration with NCA and BORAQS. We have an MOU, and we are trying to exchange information so that we can know if this building is properly designed and then properly supervised.”

The move comes amid concerns over private developers bypassing regulations and taking shortcuts in construction. Eng. Ogai cautioned that many private projects lack approvals and valid permits from the NCA, highlighting the need for stricter adherence to standards. She also noted that private developers often fail to employ registered engineers for design work, which can lead to safety issues and other problems.

Speaking at the Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK) Annual Dinner, ACEK President Eng. Jane Mutulili emphasized the importance of seeking consultancy services for project preparation and design. She stated, “We stand for excellence. We do our designs, and our designs show. If your design is being done by a consulting engineer, you are actually safe, and that is what we stand for.” The ACEK President also reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the government’s affordable housing program.

Additionally, ACEK Future Leaders Chairperson Mike Jomo announced that the organization is conducting mentorship programs to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program aims to enhance the skills of upcoming engineers and promote excellence in the sector. With the digital registration portal and collaborative efforts, the EBK and ACEK are working to improve the quality and safety of engineering projects in Kenya.
