Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senator Iyiola Omisore has condemned his exclusion from the party’s Osun State governorship primary, calling the decision “a complete farce.” He accused the screening panel of bias and procedural breaches, alleging that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola intervened to favor Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.
The APC Screening Committee disqualified Omisore and six other aspirants—Babatunde Oralusi, Oyedotun Babayemi, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, among others—citing alleged irregularities in their nomination documents. The committee said the aspirants failed to provide proof of sponsorship from at least five registered party members in each Local Government Area, a requirement of the APC Constitution and party guidelines. Consequently, only Mulikat Abiola Jimoh and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji were deemed eligible to contest the December 13 governorship primary.
Omisore disputed the basis for the disqualification, noting that none of the aspirants received formal communication about the alleged breaches. He argued that the party leadership already has access to the membership register, making the disqualification process unnecessary. Omisore met with the APC Screening Appeal Panel, together with the other affected aspirants, to raise these concerns.
He expressed confidence that the National Working Committee will revisit the matter and potentially reverse the decision, pointing to signs of factionalism within the Osun APC. The controversy has raised questions about the fairness and transparency of the party’s nomination process. The disqualification of prominent aspirants like Omisore could have significant implications for the Osun State governorship primary and the APC’s prospects in the upcoming election. As the situation unfolds, the National Working Committee’s response and the appeal panel’s decision will be closely watched, as they will determine the outcome of the primary and the party’s future in Osun State.
