The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the failed military coup in Benin Republic and pledged to support the country’s government and people. In a statement issued on Sunday, ECOWAS said it was “consternated” by the attempted takeover, describing it as a subversion of the will of the Beninese people. The regional bloc affirmed that it would assist Benin in any necessary way, including the possible deployment of its regional standby force, to defend the nation’s constitution and territorial integrity.
The attempted coup was reportedly led by a group of soldiers under Lt.-Col. Pascal Tigri, who declared himself the leader on national television. However, the Beninese government announced that the armed forces had thwarted the plot and regained control. Interior Minister Alassane Seidou confirmed that the situation was under control and that the government was working to maintain order. ECOWAS praised the efforts of the Beninese government and the Republican Army in restoring stability and called for full respect of the country’s constitution. The bloc also warned that the coup leaders would be held responsible for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions.
The Benin incident is the latest in a series of similar events in the ECOWAS sub‑region, following recent coup attempts in Guinea‑Bissau, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, all of which have exited the regional bloc. Benin’s President Patrice Talon, first elected in 2016 and re‑elected in 2021, has faced challenges in maintaining stability. The situation is being closely monitored by regional and international organizations, and ECOWAS has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Benin’s government and people in preserving peace and stability. The bloc’s willingness to deploy its standby force if necessary underscores its determination to defend the constitution and territorial integrity of its member states, and it is likely to play a key role in maintaining regional stability and promoting democratic governance.
