The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism has announced the finalists for the 20th Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting, with 14 journalists shortlisted from 184 entries. The award ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday at the MUSON Centre in Lagos, will honor distinguished Nigerians, including renowned writer Odia Ofeimun and retired President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami.

The ceremony marks the 20th anniversary of the WSCIJ and its flagship award program, serving as the grand finale of the two-day Amplify In-depth Media Conference and Awards. The milestone edition reflects two decades of the Centre’s work in strengthening investigative journalism, defending human rights, and promoting accountability in Nigeria.

Odia Ofeimun will receive the Lifetime Award for Journalistic Excellence, recognizing his decades-long contribution to journalism, literature, and public intellectualism in Nigeria. A respected columnist, playwright, and social critic, Ofeimun has consistently used his craft to challenge injustice and promote accountability. He has been a long-term supporter of WSCIJ’s programs and other journalism initiatives, serving as a judge at the maiden edition of the Wole Soyinka Award in 2005.

Justice Ayo Salami will receive the Human Rights Defender Award for his unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law. Throughout his judicial career, he championed independence of the judiciary and demonstrated steadfast dedication to human rights and public accountability. The winners of the 2025 edition will be inducted into the growing hall of Soyinka Laureates, receiving plaques, an all-expense-paid international study tour, and cash prizes.

The award recognizes journalists whose investigative reports expose corruption, regulatory failures, and human rights violations in both the public and private sectors. The WSCIJ has been at the forefront of promoting investigative journalism in Nigeria, providing a platform for journalists to showcase their work and hold power to account. The ceremony will be a celebration of the Centre’s achievements and a recognition of the important role that investigative journalism plays in promoting transparency and accountability in society.
