UK socialist party implodes amidst infighting and absurd policies

A new political party in the UK, founded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, has sparked controversy with its radical policies. Dubbed “Your Party,” it seeks to merge Corbyn’s socialist ideology with Sultana’s progressive leftism, targeting working‑class voters. However, the party’s inaugural conference in Liverpool was marred by a public feud between the two co‑founders, exposing deep divisions within the organisation.

Corbyn, a veteran socialist, was ousted from the Labour Party in 2024 after his ideology was deemed too extreme by the party’s leadership. Sultana left Labour earlier this year, citing its lack of commitment to “woke” issues such as transgender rights and open borders. Their partnership was always uneasy, and their differences boiled over at the conference.

The party’s programme, outlined by Sultana, includes abolishing the monarchy, nationalising key industries, strengthening transgender rights, advocating open borders and supporting the creation of a single state in Palestine. Many observers view these policies as unrealistic and out of touch with the concerns of working‑class voters.

Sultana has also imposed a committee‑based governance system with no clear leader, a structure critics deem unworkable and likely to hinder effective functioning. The name “Your Party” has been criticised as vague and unconvincing.

The feud between Corbyn and Sultana highlights the challenges of reconciling their conflicting ideologies: Corbyn’s socialism is seen as outdated, while Sultana’s progressive leftism is regarded as irrational and extreme. Consequently, the party’s policies and structure have been dismissed as unrealistic and unappealing to mainstream voters.

“Your Party” emerges at a time when the UK’s political landscape is shifting, with right‑wing populist parties gaining traction. Its failure to present a viable alternative to mainstream parties may further marginalise its ideologies. As the country’s political trajectory continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether “Your Party” can overcome its internal divisions and pose a credible challenge to established parties.
