The Bauchi State government has categorically denied rumors that Governor Bala Mohammed plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP). In a statement, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, called the report “entirely false” and a product of the author’s imagination. The denial responded to allegations made by the Bauchi State Publicity Secretary of the PRP, who claimed that Governor Mohammed was not welcome to join the party.
Gidado emphasized that the governor has never considered leaving the PDP and remains firmly committed to the party, where he serves as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum. He noted that Governor Mohammed has been instrumental in stabilising the PDP amid attempts by “anti‑democratic forces” to push Nigeria toward a one‑party system, and highlighted the governor’s political strength demonstrated by his previous electoral victories over the PRP. While acknowledging the governor’s constitutional right to make future political decisions, Gidado warned that such choices would not be swayed by “political turncoats thriving on falsehood and malice.”
The swift response underscores the Bauchi State government’s determination to set the record straight and reassure supporters of Governor Mohammed’s loyalty to the PDP. As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, the denial serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate information and the need to verify sources before spreading unsubstantiated claims. Observers and supporters are closely watching the governor’s stance on party loyalty, which is expected to remain a key factor in shaping the PDP’s future and its prospects in upcoming elections.
