Defection: Governor Adeleke victim of circumstance - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the defection of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on circumstances beyond his control. Ini Ememobong, the party’s factional National Publicity Secretary, explained that Adeleke’s decision resulted from a series of unresolved events that the party leadership failed to address adequately.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Ememobong said the PDP’s inability to act decisively when problems emerged in 2023 ultimately drove Adeleke away. He noted that the leadership attempted to negotiate with the governor, hoping he would reconsider once tensions had cooled, but those efforts proved unsuccessful. The party’s convention in Ibadan then cemented Adeleke’s departure.

Ememobong described Adeleke’s situation as “vicarious,” suggesting that the governor’s actions were shaped by external factors. He emphasized that the party should have taken stronger measures to resolve the underlying issues; instead, its inaction created an environment that compelled Adeleke to leave.

Adeleke’s defection is a significant development in Nigerian politics, underscoring the ongoing challenges facing the PDP. Internal conflicts and power struggles have already prompted several key members to exit the party. Moving forward, PDP leadership must confront these problems head‑on and adopt a proactive approach to prevent further defections. The party’s ability to retain members and maintain a strong political presence will depend on effectively managing internal disputes and providing clear direction for its constituents.
