FCCPC seals Ikeja Electric over consumer rights violation

FCCPC Seals Ikeja Electric For Violating Consumer Rights

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken enforcement action against Ikeja Electric, sealing its facilities due to the company’s violation of consumer rights. This move is in line with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, according to the FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Bola Adeyinka.

The commission’s decision to seal the facility was made after repeated engagements and opportunities for voluntary compliance were ignored by Ikeja Electric. The seal will remain in place until the company fully complies with directives issued by both the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the FCCPC, and provides written evidence of this compliance.

The issue stems from a binding decision by NERC, which directed Ikeja Electric to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into twenty non-Maximum Demand accounts. This was to recognize each of the nineteen residential units and a service point owned by a complainant as separate customer units, and to provide the required metering and connection. However, Ikeja Electric failed to carry out this decision, resulting in the complainant being without electricity supply for over two and a half years, despite paying all requested charges and meeting every obligation.

The FCCPC engaged Ikeja Electric several times, including notifying it of the outstanding NERC decision and issuing a directive in April 2025 on the steps required for compliance. A Compliance Notice was also issued on October 2, 2025, requiring full compliance within seven business days, but the company still did not comply.

The commission’s action highlights its commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that companies comply with regulatory directives. As of now, Ikeja Electric has not commented on the matter. The sealing of its facilities is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to regulate the electricity sector and protect consumers from unfair practices. The FCCPC’s enforcement action serves as a reminder to companies to prioritize consumer rights and comply with regulatory requirements to avoid such measures.
