A Catholic priest testified before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, recounting the June 5, 2022, terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, which killed 40 congregation members. The priest, whose identity was withheld for security reasons, described how the attackers detonated at least three explosives inside the church during the First Pentecost Sunday service.
The service was nearing its end when gunfire erupted, sending worshippers into panic. The priest, who was leading the mass, said he initially thought a commotion had broken out when he heard a loud sound, but soon realized the church was under attack. Two church members locked the main entrance door, and an elder informed the priest of the attack, prompting him to move children to a safe place.
From this safe location, the priest heard continuous shooting and the use of explosives, with the third one landing close by, causing the ground to shake. After the attackers left, the priest moved out with the children and saw his choir master shot in the chest. He also saw several dead bodies on the floor and called for help to transport the injured to the hospital.
The priest testified that he could not determine the exact number of casualties immediately after the attack due to the chaos. He made two trips to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo to take casualties to the hospital, where the emergency ward was filled with injured and dead victims.
During cross-examination, the priest stated that he could not identify the number of attackers due to the commotion and his priority to save victims, particularly children. The trial judge, Emeka Nwite, adjourned proceedings to January 13 and 14, 2026, for further hearing.
The attack on St. Francis Catholic Church was a devastating incident that resulted in significant loss of life and injury. The trial of the five alleged Al Shabab members accused of orchestrating the attack is ongoing, with the priest’s testimony providing a firsthand account of the events that unfolded. The case highlights the need for continued efforts to combat terrorism and ensure the safety and security of citizens.
