Nigerian Govt temporarily opens Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Federal Government of Nigeria has temporarily opened a 47‑kilometre stretch of the Lagos‑Calabar coastal highway—Section 1, which runs from the Ahmadu Bello Way junction to the Eleko village junction. The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive, as announced by Minister of Works Dave Umahi on Friday, and is intended to improve traffic flow and accessibility in Lagos during the festive period.

Minister Umahi had previously pledged, during an inspection tour of the coastal highway project on 23 November 2025, that Section 1 would be completed and opened to traffic between 12 and 17 December 2025. The partial reopening is expected to ease congestion along the Lekki‑Ajah corridor, cutting travel time by more than 100 percent and reducing travel costs.

The minister also indicated that Section 1 and half of Section 2 (excluding the bridges) are slated for completion in April 2026, paving the way for full commissioning of the Lagos‑Calabar coastal highway. This major infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region. The temporary opening of Section 1 demonstrates the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises and improving citizens’ lives.

Commuters and residents, who have faced chronic traffic jams and long travel times, have welcomed the announcement. The government’s efforts are seen as a positive step, and the full completion of the highway is eagerly anticipated. With Section 1 now open, the transportation network in the area is set to improve significantly, and the eventual completion of the project is expected to bring even greater benefits to the region.
