Senegal Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko Calls for Judicial Reform

Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, used the occasion of Martyrs’ Day to address internal party cohesion and the need for judicial reform. The day commemorates victims of political violence between 2021 and 2024. In his speech, Sonko appealed for unity within the party and government, describing internal disagreements as a sign of vitality rather than a threat.

The Prime Minister acknowledged rumors of tensions within the government and directly addressed the disagreements with the Head of State. He emphasized the importance of consultation and internal dialogue, stating that those who share the same goal must work together. Sonko also urged his supporters to exercise restraint and avoid verbal excesses, emphasizing that disagreements should lead to better communication, not division.

In a gesture to strengthen cohesion, Sonko praised the steadfastness and determination of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, whose leadership was sometimes met with criticism during difficult times. The Prime Minister reminded his supporters that the current leaders were also victims of past adversity and should remain level-headed in the face of disappointment.

Addressing the frustration among victims’ families, Sonko reaffirmed his party’s commitment to seeking justice through ethical means. He emphasized that the party has the means to seek revenge but chooses the path of justice, demanding that it be served according to the rules. The Prime Minister warned against exploiting frustrations for political gain, which could compromise the movement’s cohesion.

Sonko identified the current state of the justice system as a primary source of delays and frustration, emphasizing the need for urgent reform. He called for changes within the judiciary, including the replacement of some magistrates, to ensure that authorities can act swiftly and fairly. The Prime Minister reiterated that seeking justice requires methodical investigations and warned against unrealistic expectations of instant judicial decisions.

In conclusion, Sonko called for patience and support, positioning judicial reform as crucial for the country’s stability and the restoration of citizens’ trust. He also announced his intention to run in future elections, including the 2029 presidential election, and the imminent resumption of his political campaigns. The Prime Minister’s speech aimed to reassure victims’ families, promote party unity, and emphasize the need for judicial reform to ensure that the martyrs’ sacrifice is not in vain.
