Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo praised the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its efforts to stabilize and reposition the party. The commendation came during a consultative visit by the PDP NWC, led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, to Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo urged the NWC to remain committed to its mission, emphasizing the importance of discipline within the party. He stressed that anyone wishing to belong to a political party must adhere strictly to its rules and regulations. “Things are not beyond repair,” he said, adding that the committee was “doing very well” and should continue its work diligently.
Highlighting the role of a strong, focused opposition in any democracy, Obasanjo charged the NWC to prioritize the nation’s interest. He offered his experience and insights to the leadership, affirming his readiness to provide guidance when necessary. The former president also expressed concern about the current state of the nation, stating that the federal government’s approach is not in the country’s best interest.
In response, PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s support and wisdom, noting that the former president’s advice and counsel are invaluable and will be relied upon as the party works to rebuild and unify. The visit was intended to tap into Obasanjo’s experience and gain his perspective on the party’s future and the state of the nation.
The meeting comes at a time when the PDP is seeking to reposition itself as a viable opposition force in Nigerian politics. Obasanjo’s endorsement and guidance are likely to be seen as a significant boost to the party’s efforts. As the party moves forward, it is expected to prioritize the nation’s interest and work towards providing a strong, focused opposition to the current government.
