A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki, SAN, visited former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday to seek his guidance and support. The meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, was attended by Turaki, some executive members of his faction of the National Working Committee, and other party leaders, including former governors Babangida Aliyu and Jonah Jang.
According to Turaki, the visit aimed to tap into Obasanjo’s experience and wisdom in leading the party to success and dislodging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. Turaki described Obasanjo as a highly respected elder statesman and former President under the PDP administration, whose legacy of building strong institutions has contributed to democratic growth in Nigeria.
The PDP faction expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for his vision and contributions to strengthening democracy and good governance during his tenure. They sought his advice, guidance, and critical support in their mission to reclaim power in 2027. Turaki acknowledged that the task ahead would be challenging due to the APC’s incompetence and poor management but expressed confidence that with Obasanjo’s inspiration and guidance, the PDP is ready to take on the challenge.
Turaki stated that the PDP is battle-ready for 2027 and predicted that the party’s victory in the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Ekiti and Osun states would demonstrate its resurgence. The party’s National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, and Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, urged party members to remain united and start mobilizing to restore the party to power and continue its legacy of excellent governance and welfare for the populace.
The meeting highlights the PDP’s efforts to regroup and strategize ahead of the 2027 elections, with a focus on leveraging the experience and expertise of elder statesmen like Obasanjo to inform its approach. As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, the PDP’s ability to unite and present a strong challenge to the APC will be closely watched in the coming months.
