A recent attack in Plateau State, Nigeria, has resulted in the deaths of four young children, allegedly at the hands of suspected Fulani herdsmen. The incident occurred in the Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where the herdsmen are believed to have carried out a reprisal attack in response to the rustling of their cows.
According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the attack took place on Thursday, less than 48 hours after local militias launched coordinated assaults on pastoral communities in Barkin Ladi, Jos East, and Riyom Local Government Areas. During these incidents, at least 168 cattle were rustled, and several others were poisoned. The expert reported that on Wednesday evening, 137 cattle were stolen around the Nding community in Fan District, while another 34 were taken from Kukukah community in Jos East.
The victims of the attack have been identified as Precious Joshuah, 17; Isaac Joshuah, 9; Mary Joshuah, 7; and Eve Sambo, 3. A community leader in Foron District, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, amidst heightened tension following the cattle rustling incidents. The leader warned that reprisals were imminent if no action was taken, and sadly, those fears have now materialized.
Troops and other security operatives have been deployed to the area to prevent further escalation and restore calm. The community leader called on the state government and security agencies to urgently intervene, arrest perpetrators on all sides, and address the underlying causes of the recurring violence. This incident is the latest in a series of clashes between herders and local communities in the region, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property. The Plateau State government and security agencies face the challenge of finding a lasting solution to the conflict, which has been fueled by competing claims to land and resources.
