Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki said that the tragic death of a child in a flood prompted his administration to build the 4.1‑kilometre Ogheghe and old Sapele roads in Benin City. Dr Patrick Obahiagbon, the governor’s chief press secretary, reported that Obaseki made the disclosure during an unscheduled road inspection after a church service. He explained that residents had raised concerns about erosion and safety, and the loss of a child to erosion spurred the government into action.
During the inspection, the governor urged the contractors to use the remaining five months of the dry season to accelerate work and meet the project’s timeline. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of the construction but stressed that the pace must increase to ensure completion before the rains return. Obaseki also took photographs to verify that the work complied with approved specifications, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the schedule given the limited dry‑season window.
The Ogheghe and old Sapele road project is a major infrastructure effort aimed at mitigating erosion and improving safety for local communities. Its completion is expected to relieve residents who have previously suffered from flooding and erosion, providing better road conditions, reduced flood risk, and enhanced overall safety in the area.
