The Accord Party has rejected a parallel governorship primary election held in Osun State, describing it as a sham. The party characterized the individuals involved as “jokers” and “political nomads” with no genuine stake in the democratic process.
According to the party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disavowed the exercise, terming those involved as “political merchants.” As a result, the Accord Party has chosen not to engage with what it considers frivolous activities. The party’s focus remains on its governorship candidate, incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is committed to delivering democratic dividends to the people of Osun State.
The national leadership of the Accord Party made these comments in response to a parallel primary election staged by a group the party describes as “fun-seeking fellows” attempting to mock the nation’s democratic system. The party believes this exercise was sponsored by opposition figures in the state who are uneasy about Governor Adeleke’s emergence as the party’s flagbearer.
INEC has stated that it was not informed about the parallel primary, suggesting that its purpose was to sow confusion in the state. In a statement, Joseph Omorogbe, the Accord Party’s National Publicity Secretary, noted that the party welcomes new members and those interested in joining, emphasizing its capacity to accommodate a large number of individuals seeking good governance and a better future.
The Accord Party’s stance underscores its commitment to unity, stability, security, and prosperity. By dismissing the parallel primary as a charade, the party seeks to reassure its supporters and the public of its dedication to democratic principles and the electoral process. As the political landscape in Osun State continues to evolve, the party’s resolve to focus on substantive issues rather than engaging with what it perceives as distractions may set the tone for its campaign strategy.
