According to the book’s author, Dr. Charles Omole, Buhari’s choice was driven by security concerns and a desire to maintain unity within the ruling party. He feared that publicly backing a candidate could expose that individual to risk and deepen divisions within the APC.
Former Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, elaborated on this rationale. He explained that Buhari deliberately avoided endorsing any aspirant to protect the candidate’s life and preserve a fragile equilibrium in the party. Bichi noted that Buhari’s silence was often misinterpreted as indifference, but it was actually a calculated security decision based on intelligence reports. The political climate at the time was tense, with “knives out” and a real risk of violence; by staying neutral, Buhari aimed to shield potential candidates from harm.
The biography also discusses Buhari’s decision not to reverse the removal of Lawal Daura as DSS Director General—a move made by then‑Acting President Yemi Osinbajo while Buhari was abroad on medical leave. Bichi said Buhari believed overturning the decision would undermine Osinbajo’s authority and damage institutional stability.
Buhari’s governance style is portrayed as disciplined and evidence‑based, emphasizing professionalism and restraint. He consistently demanded proof from security chiefs before taking action, refusing to act on rumors or unverified claims.
