Abaribe Slams Tinubu’s Leadership Style

'Tinubu runs Kabiyesi govt, Peter Obi will do better' - Abaribe

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s leadership style, suggesting that the administration has become overly authoritarian. In a television interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Abaribe stated that the government has taken on a “Kabiyesi” approach, where the president’s views are not challenged.

Abaribe, who represents Abia South, expressed his preference for a more democratic approach to governance, citing former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as an example of a leader who could effectively run the country. He emphasized the importance of challenging the government’s views, stating that any opposing opinions are currently being dismissed as treasonous.

The senator also criticized the involvement of President Tinubu’s family in the administration, arguing that this is not in line with democratic principles. He noted that during Peter Obi’s tenure as governor, his family was not involved in the running of the state, and that this approach is more suitable for a democratic country like Nigeria.

Abaribe dismissed claims that he had sung a song in support of President Tinubu’s mandate, stating that he had never done so and would not do so in the future. He explained that when the national anthem is played during budget presentations at the National Assembly, he stands up, but he does not participate in singing the “on your mandate” song.

The senator’s comments highlight concerns about the current state of governance in Nigeria and the need for a more democratic and inclusive approach. As the country continues to navigate its political landscape, Abaribe’s statements are likely to spark further debate about the role of leadership and the importance of challenging authority. With the administration’s approach to governance under scrutiny, it remains to be seen how President Tinubu will respond to these criticisms and whether he will adopt a more consultative approach to leadership.
