Senate confirms INEC and NERC appointments

Senate okays appointments of new REC, NERC commissioners

The Nigerian Senate has given its approval for the appointment of Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu as the Resident Electoral Commissioner representing Abia State on the Independent National Electoral Commission. This decision was made alongside the confirmation of Aisha Kanti Bello and Dr. Animashaun Fouad Olayinka as commissioners of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission. Bello’s appointment is an extension of her current term, while Olayinka is a new addition.

These confirmations came after the Senate considered reports from its Committee on Electoral Matters, led by Senator Simon Lalong, and the Committee on Power, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. Both committee chairmen reported that the nominees met all constitutional and professional requirements for their respective positions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the committees and the chamber for their efficient work. He congratulated the newly confirmed electoral commissioner, wishing him success and urging fairness and equity in promoting democracy and ensuring justice. Akpabio also praised President Bola Tinubu for submitting a list of qualified nominees for the positions, describing them as ideal candidates for their roles.

The Senate President emphasized the importance of these appointments, stating that the nominees are well-suited for their positions and expressing his hope that they will act with wisdom and justice, not just for politicians, but for all Nigerian voters. He further acknowledged the Committee on Power for their diligent work in reviewing the nominations.

The approval of these appointments is significant as it fills key positions in the electoral and energy regulatory bodies, which play crucial roles in the country’s democratic process and energy sector. The swift confirmation process reflects the Senate’s commitment to ensuring that these bodies are adequately staffed to carry out their duties effectively. With these appointments, the focus now shifts to the nominees as they embark on their responsibilities, aiming to contribute positively to Nigeria’s democratic development and energy regulation.
