US approves $11 billion Taiwan arms sale in largest package ever

The United States Department of War has approved a significant arms deal with Taiwan, valued at $11.1 billion, marking the largest US weapons package ever for the island. This development follows a $330 million agreement in November for spare and repair parts for aircraft. The comprehensive deal encompasses eight separate purchases, including 82 HIMARS rocket systems and 420 ATACMS missiles, worth over $4 billion, as well as anti-tank missiles, anti-armor missiles, loitering suicide drones, howitzers, military software, and parts for other equipment.

The Taiwanese defense ministry views this acquisition as essential for maintaining “sufficient self-defense capabilities” while the US continues to support the island in building “strong deterrent power” and leveraging “asymmetric warfare advantages.” These efforts are seen as crucial for maintaining regional peace and stability. The deal is currently at the congressional notification stage, allowing lawmakers to block or modify the sale if necessary.

According to the Pentagon, the proposed sales will advance US national, economic, and security interests by backing Taiwan’s efforts to modernize its armed forces and maintain a “credible defensive capability.” The US has been encouraging Taiwan to increase its military purchases in recent years, with this latest announcement being the second major arms sale under the current US administration.

The US officially supports the One-China policy, recognizing Taiwan as an integral part of China. However, Washington has maintained contact with Taipei and continued to supply arms to the island, while also promising to defend it militarily in the event of a conflict with the mainland. China has reiterated its goal of “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan but has warned that it will not hesitate to use force if the island formally declares independence.

China has yet to comment on the latest arms deal, but it has consistently condemned Washington’s military cooperation with Taiwan. The Taiwanese defense ministry believes that this package will significantly enhance the island’s defense capabilities, allowing it to better respond to potential security threats. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community will be closely monitoring the developments and their implications for regional stability.
