The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has assured the public of sufficient petroleum products to meet demand during the festive season, aiming to prevent fuel shortages. IPMAN National President, Abubakar Shettima, made this announcement at a press briefing in Abuja, emphasizing the need for urgent action from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Shettima specifically called on these agencies to ensure the immediate payment of outstanding bridging claims owed to IPMAN members, totaling over ₦190 billion. He stressed that settling this debt should be a priority for the NMDPRA’s new leadership, warning that delays could disrupt the smooth supply of petroleum products in the near future.
IPMAN also expressed support for efforts to increase local production, including those by the Dangote Group and other refinery operators. According to the association, higher local production will reduce the need for foreign exchange and enable Nigerians to benefit from lower fuel prices. This development is significant, given Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products and the potential for increased local production to enhance energy security.
The assurance of sufficient fuel supply comes as the country prepares for the festive season, a period typically characterized by increased demand for petroleum products. IPMAN’s commitment to preventing fuel queues is crucial to ensuring the smooth operation of economic activities during this period. The association’s call for urgent action from regulatory agencies highlights the need for cooperation between stakeholders to address long-standing issues affecting the petroleum sector.
As the Nigerian government continues to implement policies aimed at enhancing the country’s energy sector, the role of IPMAN and other industry stakeholders remains critical. The association’s support for increased local production aligns with the government’s objectives, and the payment of outstanding bridging claims is essential to ensuring the stability of the petroleum marketing sector. With the festive season approaching, the Nigerian public will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold.
