The Lagos State Government conducted an enforcement operation on December 20, 2025, to clear roadside markets along the Ikotun-Igando Road in the Alimosho Local Government Area. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the action in a post on his official social media handle, sharing video footage of the exercise. The operation targeted Ikotun Main Market, Igando Market, and other informal trading points, aiming to remove traders who had unlawfully occupied road setbacks and pedestrian walkways.
The exercise was carried out to address issues of indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental infractions, which have been a concern for the state government. According to Wahab, the goal of the enforcement was to restore order, improve traffic flow, and uphold Lagos State’s sanitation and environmental regulations. The operation was jointly executed by Project WISE, led by Mr Bayo Oladeji, and the Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste services, led by Mr Tunde Sulaiman.
The Lagos State Government has been working to maintain a clean and orderly environment, and this operation is part of its efforts to enforce sanitation and environmental laws. The state government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and upholding environmental regulations. Traders have been warned against activities that undermine these laws, and the government has pledged to continue taking action against those who flout them.
The enforcement operation is significant, as it highlights the state government’s efforts to balance the needs of traders and residents with the need to maintain a clean and safe environment. The Ikotun-Igando Road is a busy corridor, and the removal of roadside markets is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. The operation also serves as a reminder of the importance of proper waste disposal and environmental management in urban areas. As the Lagos State Government continues to work towards maintaining a clean and orderly environment, it is likely that similar enforcement operations will be carried out in other areas of the state.
