Tunisia protests erupt after police killing of young man

Tunisia has witnessed a surge in anti-government protests following the death of a young man who was severely beaten by police in late November. The latest wave of demonstrations erupted in the Kairouan region, resulting in the arrest of at least 21 people. The protests were sparked by the death of 21-year-old Naim Briki, who succumbed to his injuries on December 12, nearly three weeks after being chased and beaten by police.

According to reports, Briki was riding a motorcycle without proper documentation when he was pursued by police. The chase ended with Briki’s motorcycle colliding with a police vehicle, and his family alleges that he was subsequently brutally beaten by several officers. The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) has condemned the incident, stating that Briki’s death highlights the country’s “policy of impunity” and “systematic police violence.”

The FTDES has called for a transparent judicial investigation into Briki’s death, demanding that those responsible be held accountable. The organization has also warned the authorities to end impunity in cases of torture and police violence, and to stop the repression and prosecution of protesters. The Tunisian judiciary has ordered the release of 20 people arrested in connection with the protests, but issued arrest warrants for four others.

The public prosecutor’s office in Kairouan has announced an inquiry into Briki’s death, aiming to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. The FTDES has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, ensuring that the truth is revealed and those responsible are brought to justice. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many criticizing the Tunisian authorities’ handling of the situation.

The protests in Kairouan are part of a larger wave of anti-government demonstrations that have swept the country in recent weeks. The demonstrations have been met with a heavy-handed response from the authorities, with reports of excessive force and arbitrary arrests. The international community is watching the situation closely, with many calling for restraint and respect for human rights. As the investigation into Briki’s death continues, the Tunisian government faces mounting pressure to address the underlying issues driving the protests and to ensure accountability for those responsible for the young man’s tragic death.
