Trump names envoy to Greenland — RT World News

U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland, an island that remains under Danish sovereignty. In announcing the appointment on Truth Social, Trump said Landry “understands how essential Greenland is to our national security.” Landry himself has said that, in his new role, he will work to make Greenland a part of the United States. He also assured that his duties as governor, which he assumed last year, will not be affected by this volunteer position.

Denmark has reacted strongly to the development. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called the appointment “completely unacceptable” and said it came “out of nowhere.” The Danish Foreign Ministry plans to summon the U.S. ambassador in Copenhagen to demand explanations. Greenland’s prime minister, Jens‑Frederik Nielsen, downplayed the move, stating that it “doesn’t change anything for us at home” and that the island still belongs to its people.

Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland dates back to his first term, and he has not ruled out annexation. The United States has maintained a military presence on the strategically important island since World War II. In March, Vice President J.D. Vance visited the U.S. Space Force base on Greenland’s northwest coast, noting that while the U.S. was unlikely to use military force to seize the territory, it remained open to the idea of locals exercising their right to self‑determination and breaking away from Denmark.

The appointment has significant implications for U.S.–Danish relations and the future of Greenland. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how Denmark and Greenland will respond to the United States’ renewed interest in the island, which continues to play a major role in U.S. strategic and foreign‑policy considerations in the region.
