A wave of relief has swept over Niger State following the release of 130 kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers from St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government. The abductees, who spent almost a month in captivity, were primarily younger pupils. They were officially handed over to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The released group arrived in six buses and was welcomed back by Governor Bago and senior government officials at a ceremony in Government House, Minna. This development brings an end to weeks of uncertainty and trauma over their fate. The abductees expressed gratitude to God, the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Rev Dr Bulus Yohanna, government authorities, and security agencies for their efforts towards their safe return.
According to the teachers, who were visibly elated, they had been praying for a reunion with their families, particularly to spend Christmas together. One teacher, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “God has heard our prayers, and we are thankful.” Another teacher condemned the kidnapping, especially of the younger pupils, saying, “Some of these children are too young to be abducted, but thankfully, we are back alive.”
The latest release brings the total number of rescued students to 230. Initially, 315 students, including 12 teachers, were abducted on November 21, 2025. Following the abduction, 50 students escaped and reunited with their families on November 22, 2025, leaving 265 in captivity. The release of the remaining hostages is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to secure the freedom of all abducted individuals.
The Niger State government and security agencies have been working tirelessly to ensure the safe return of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers. The recent release is a testament to their efforts and coordination. As the community begins to heal, attention will be focused on providing support and counseling to the affected individuals and their families. The incident has highlighted the need for enhanced security measures in schools and the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies and local communities to prevent such incidents in the future.
