Abia government seals structurally defective building in Umuahia

A three-storey building in Umuahia, Abia State, has been sealed off by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) due to structural defects that pose a danger to public safety. The building, located at No. 20 Kaduna Street by Uzuakoli Road, was found to have serious structural issues that could result in a collapse if left unaddressed.

According to the General Manager of UCDA, Kingsley Agomoh, a preliminary assessment of the building revealed significant defects that necessitated immediate action to prevent loss of life. Agomoh ordered the occupants to vacate the premises, citing the risks associated with the building’s condition. He emphasized that the agency’s proactive step was aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and preventing potential disasters.

The UCDA has announced plans to conduct further tests to determine the extent of the structural defects and decide whether the building should be demolished or rehabilitated. Agomoh warned that any building found to have similar defects would face similar action, stressing the importance of adhering to building codes and regulations. He also advised property owners to avoid cutting corners and prioritize the safety of their structures.

The move by the UCDA is part of its efforts to ensure that buildings in the state capital meet safety standards and comply with regulations. The agency’s actions are aimed at preventing incidents of building collapses, which can result in loss of life and property. The sealing of the building serves as a reminder to property owners and developers to prioritize safety and maintain their structures regularly.

The UCDA’s initiative is also a step towards enhancing public safety and preventing accidents in the state. By taking proactive measures to address structural defects, the agency is helping to mitigate risks and protect the lives of residents. As the agency continues to monitor and regulate buildings in the state capital, property owners are advised to take necessary steps to ensure their structures are safe and compliant with regulations.
