The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national convention, which took place in Ibadan, Oyo State last November, has not been recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), according to Amah Abraham, a chieftain of the PDP. Abraham made this disclosure during an interview on Arise Television, stating that INEC’s stance on the matter is clear.
The PDP’s national convention was a significant event, as it aimed to bring stability and direction to the party. However, the convention’s outcome has been met with controversy, with some stakeholders disputing its legitimacy. INEC, as the regulatory body responsible for overseeing Nigeria’s electoral process, has a crucial role in resolving the dispute.
Abraham explained that INEC issued a caution to the warring factions within the PDP, rather than endorsing the convention’s outcome. He noted that INEC emphasized the importance of adhering to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the electoral law. The commission also highlighted that the convention proceeded despite judgments from two Federal High Courts.
The PDP’s internal conflicts have been ongoing, with various factions vying for control. The party’s national convention was expected to provide a clear direction, but the lack of recognition from INEC has created uncertainty. Turaki, who claims to be the valid winner of the convention, presented himself as the legitimate leader, but INEC’s chairman reportedly made it clear that the convention’s outcome is not recognized due to its contravention of court judgments.
The situation highlights the complexities of Nigeria’s electoral landscape and the need for clarity and stability within political parties. As the country navigates its democratic process, the role of INEC in ensuring compliance with electoral laws and regulations is crucial. The commission’s decision not to recognize the PDP’s national convention outcome underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting the judgments of the courts. The next steps in this process will be closely watched, as the PDP and INEC work towards resolving the dispute and providing a clear direction for the party.
