Ogun Launches Family Planning Finance Tracker

Ogun state govt emerges runner-up in PHC leadership challenge award

The Ogun State Government has launched the State Family Planning Finance Tracker, a tool designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and sustainability in family planning funding. The launch took place at a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The meeting brought together key stakeholders from government ministries, development partners, civil society organizations, and the media to discuss the importance of reproductive health financing.

According to Commissioner for Health Tomi Coker, the FP Finance Tracker will provide clear insights into family planning financing in Ogun State, documenting budget allocations, fund releases, expenditures, and existing funding gaps. This will enable better-informed planning and policy decisions, ultimately strengthening the state’s healthcare system. The tracker’s primary purpose is to present and validate findings, enhancing stakeholders’ understanding of how family planning funds flow within the state’s health system.

Dr. Akinkunmi Akinbajo, representing UNFPA, emphasized the importance of sustainable domestic financing for uninterrupted access to family planning services, particularly for women, adolescents, and underserved populations. While donor support has been instrumental, states must take ownership of financing reproductive health programs to guarantee long-term impact. The Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Healthcare Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, noted that the FP Finance Tracker is a decision-making tool that promotes transparency, strengthens accountability, and supports the identification of gaps and opportunities for improved financing of family planning services.

The launch of the FP Finance Tracker is a significant step towards addressing the reproductive health needs of Ogun State’s population. With a growing emphasis on sustainable development and universal access to healthcare, the tracker’s implementation is timely. As the state moves forward with its family planning program, the tracker will play a crucial role in ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively. The next steps will involve the integration of the tracker’s findings into the state’s healthcare policy, with a focus on strengthening budget performance and improving access to family planning services.
