INEC seeks media support in establishment of Electoral Offences Tribunal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified its stance on the leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that it will not recognise the Kabiru Turaki‑led National Working Committee (NWC). In a letter dated 22 December 2025, signed by INEC Secretary Dr Rose Oriaran‑Anthony, the commission explained that its decision is guided by existing court judgments and unresolved legal processes.

The letter addresses demands that INEC acknowledge and upload on its website the list of national officers allegedly elected at the PDP’s National Convention held on 15‑16 November 2025 in Ibadan. INEC said it cannot act on these demands because of subsisting court decisions and pending litigation relating to the PDP’s leadership crisis. By refraining from recognising any factional officers while the matter remains before the courts, INEC aims to maintain neutrality and avoid exacerbating the internal conflict.

This approach underscores the commission’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and avoiding actions that could be perceived as premature or biased. The leadership crisis has been a subject of legal contention, with various factions vying for recognition. INEC’s decision reflects its role as an impartial electoral umpire, seeking to navigate the complex legal landscape surrounding the PDP’s internal disputes.

As the matter continues to unfold in the courts, INEC’s position will be closely watched by stakeholders and observers. The significance of its stance lies in its potential impact on the PDP’s internal dynamics and the broader electoral landscape in Nigeria. As the country’s electoral commission, INEC’s decisions have far‑reaching implications for political parties and the democratic process. With the PDP’s leadership crisis remaining unresolved, INEC’s commitment to respecting the legal process will be crucial in ensuring the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
