The Action People’s Party (APP) in Imo State has condemned the alleged restriction of its leader, Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, from using the private wing of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri. The party claims that the restriction was imposed by agents of the Imo State government, allegedly on the directive of Governor Hope Uzodinma.
According to the APP, the incident occurred on Tuesday in the presence of Hon. Matthew Nwogu, the member representing Ngor Okpala/Aboh Mbaise federal constituency, who shared a flight with Amadi. The party views the restriction as a targeted and state-orchestrated action designed to harass and intimidate its leader, rather than a logistical oversight.
In a statement issued by the state Publicity Secretary, Cajetan Duke, the APP described the action as “laughable and profoundly condescending.” The party stated that Amadi has always been a man of the people and that the public wing of the airport aligns with his character and commitment to interacting directly with citizens.
The APP noted that the incident is part of a sustained pattern of conduct by the government, which has also attempted to disrupt civic receptions and events organized by opposition groups. The party condemned the government’s reliance on intimidation and brute force as political tools, stating that it represents a reckless resort to political rascality and brutality.
The APP called on the government to redirect its focus towards addressing the pressing needs of Imo State, including providing security, rebuilding infrastructure, and creating opportunities for dignified living. The party remains undaunted and resolute in the face of harassment and intimidation, and has urged people of goodwill to recognize these acts as signs of a failing government.
The incident has highlighted the tensions between the Imo State government and opposition parties, with the APP accusing the government of prioritizing the harassment of opponents over the welfare of the people. The party’s commitment to democratic engagement and good governance remains unwavering, despite the challenges it faces. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the APP’s criticisms and demands.
