Nigeria is facing a significant electricity shortage as the Christmas period approaches. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that the disruption, caused by an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos gas pipeline, is expected to continue for another 24 to 48 hours. The blast has severely limited gas supplies to several power plants, reducing electricity generation and creating a nationwide shortage.
NISO is closely monitoring repair efforts undertaken by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company. The damaged pipeline is being restored and is projected to be fully operational within the next 24 to 48 hours. Once repairs are completed, the affected power stations should resume operations, leading to a gradual restoration of electricity supply across the country.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited earlier reported that the explosion occurred on an oil pipeline in Delta State, further highlighting the severity of the incident. The shortage has considerable implications for residents, especially during the holiday season, disrupting businesses, communication, and essential services.
NISO’s ongoing work to repair the pipeline offers hope for a swift resolution. The agency will continue to monitor progress and provide updates on both the pipeline’s status and electricity supply. Residents can anticipate a return to normal power levels in the near future, bringing much‑needed relief to those affected by the shortage.
